Artisan of Buddhist Painting ‘Sukhwan Im’
( Gyeonggi-do intangible cultural asset 118 | Date of designation : 2006.01.10 )
Buddhist drawing (佛畵) is the drawing that expresses the principle of Buddhism to more easily and effectively diffuse Buddhism. Master (匠人) is called as Buddhist drawing artist (佛畵匠).
Buddhist drawing is classified into many categories depending on manufacturing types. In Korea, Tanghwa (幀畵) that drew images on the piece of cloth or paper and hung in the frame has been well developed in Korea. Completed Tanghwa becomes an object of religion in 佛壇 after going through several religious ritual procedures.
Unlike Buddhist drawing that easily expresses principles for the worship or reformation, Danchung (丹靑) is what inserts geometric patterns and images on the wall of palace, Buddhist temple, and other temples. Danchung master (丹靑匠) with Danchung ability is designated as an intangible cultural asset in 1972. Afterwards, Buddhist drawing has been succeeded by Danchung master. Buddhist drawing and Danchung had huge difference in terms of the manufacturing purpose and expressive methods. Many people regard Buddhist drawings to have unique traditional value and features. As such an opinion was accepted, Buddhist drawing artist was designated as a major intangible cultural asset 118 on January 10, 2006.
