Story of Amitabha Seokguram of Bukhan Mountain, Goyang

Under the Wonpyobong Peak of Bukhang-dong, Deogyang-gu, Goyang, remains Amitabha (old Deokamsa Temple). Following the Bukhan Mountain stream or Daeseomun from the gate of Bukhan Mountain Fortress, there is sign for Amitabha to the left.

Walking 200m passed the Wonhyo Bridge as the road sign states, Amitabha appears behind a pine tree forest.

At the center of the temple, there is a large yard, center of which stands a beautiful stone. This temple is only for Buddhist nuns and has various wooden Amitabha statues designated as Gyeonggo-do’s cultural assets. It is a traditional temple designated by the state.

The temple in Hanok style blends well with Uisangbong Peak and Wonhyopong Peak and it is a place of beautiful viewpoint of Goyang.

To the right of sansingak (house for of mountain spirit) stands a Tortoise rock.
It is in a shape of looking up the sky and everyone marvels how much it loks like a tortoise.

Under the Tortoise rock is the main hall of Amitabha, Daewoongjeon Hall.
What is interesting is that Daewoongjeon is not a wooden structure but is inside the rock cave.

The natural cave has been trimmed and used as Daewoongjeon, fitting over 100 people at once.

Inside, the cave feels cool in summertime without air conditioning, having a great temperature difference with the outside area.

Walls and ceiling show that the hall is entirely inside a stone cave.
Outside the cave at sansingak, you can see the hall hidden by the giant rock.

This cave is the legend that the High Priest Wonhyo of Shilla Dynasty had stayed. With the legend, there is a portrait of High Priest Wonhyo inside the hall. Inside the Daewoongjeon there are tree statues, which are all designated as Gyeonggido’s cultural assets.

The wooden statues are cultural assets known for detail and warm smile.

Like Seokguram of Toham Mountain of Kyeongju, there is water that flows underground to the west of the cave. This water helps the cave maintain its cool temperature. It is located 30 minutes from the Bukhan Mountain Fortress parking lot. Visiting the beautiful Seokguram of Amitabha of beautiful scenery is an easy place to visit.
