The present and the future of MICE industry in Goyang-si

What is MICE?

- MICE is an abbreviation of meeting, incentive travel, convention, and exhibition/event.

How much has MICE (convention) industry been developed?

- Convention has been rapidly grown in the 2000s. Korean MICE industry has been rapidly grown in a short amount of time. The number of foreigners participating in MICE has rapidly increased from 950 thousand in 2011 to 1.56 million in 2015. The amount of consumption per person significantly increased from 2,585 dollar in 2011 to 3,127 dollar in 2015. Especially, the amount of consumption per person turned out to be 1.8 times higher than 1,715 dollar of expenditure from regular tourists. This shows how valuable MICE industry is.
Due to such growth, KINTEX was recorded to be the second top in the rank for holding convention (based on UIA) in the world in in 2015 and the first top in Asia.
According to UIA that officially reports statistical data for international convention, KINTEX was recorded to be the second top next to America in the rank for holding the convention in 2015.

Current status of exhibition convention

- In Korea, there are 15 exhibition conventions, and many of the exhibition convention centers are in progress of new installation and expansion in each area. Goyang KINTEX constitutes 40.1% in Korea as its area is 108,483m2.
The area of convention room is 13,030m2. As such, KINTEX is reputed as the representative convention center in Korea.

Areas with construction for expansion of new exhibition convention in Korea include Songdo Convensia in Songdo, Incheon, (in progress of 2nd stage of construction) and CECO in Changwon. In addition, areas scheduled with construction of convention center include Suwon (started construction in 2017) and Ulsan (scheduled to start construction in 2018). Goyang KINTEX is currently in third stage of construction for expansion. In addition, plans were setup to newly construct exhibition convention on the site of Jamsil Stadium. When these facilities are completed in construction, MICE industry is expected to be more dynamically developed in Korea.
