Goyang Sangyeo Hoidaji Sori as an origin for funeral rite culture held during the funeral of parents

Sangyeo Sori is comprised of coffin carrying (發靷) sound immediately before bier takes off the house and coffin delivering (運喪) sound that he/she delivers coffin to the burial plot. Coffin delivering sound is classified into the sound when moving on the level ground, going across the bridge, and also moving across mountain and hill. Hoidaji Sori indicates to put lime powder to dirt to make the tomb solidified. ‘Goyang Sangyeo Hoidaji Sori (高陽喪輿 灰dajisori)’ designated as Gyeonggi-do intangible cultural asset 27-4 was originated as coffin carrying culture by Yubong Kim (born in 1725) with last name from Gimnyeong Kim during the funeral of his parents. Afterwards, his descendant as well as the government officer, Sungkwon Kim (born in 1867) who was in charge of the civil engineering and repairing construction of castle as well as the role of supervisor in Sungonggam (繕工監) restored the foundation. However, it is now facing a risk to be disconnected from succession due to modernization. In spite of such risk, Goyang Sangyeo Sori Preservation Committee has been succeeding the sound that it has become a representative folk song in Goyang-si.
Korean traditional funeral songs that are rare in foreign countries. In terms of musical or cultural perspective, Sangyeo Sori and Hoidaji Sori are all valuable as a ritual song that represents the circumstances and the environment of funerals. ‘Goyang Sangyeo Hoidaji Sori’ is comprised of coffin carrying sound, coffin delivering sond, logng Sangyeo sori, Numcha sori, Yumbul sori, Hoibanga sori, and long sori, and have their originality in the area of Goyang-si.
