Janghang Wetlands

Janghang Wetlands is a part of the wetlands of Han River’s southern mouth that is within the territory of Goyang City, sized 2.5 times larger than Yeoi-do. Janghang Wetlands is signicant for a variety of reasons. It is the only river mouth of the 4 rivers that is not blocked with embankment, and the riverwater and seawater mixes to form brackish water zone. The name Janghang means “corner of deers”; Janghang Wetlands is the biggest habitat of elks in Korea. Also, as a wintering pond, it proves a safe shelter for migratory birds such as white-naped cranes, bean geese, mallards. Furthermore, it is also famous as a reed colony since it is the only place in Han River’s mouth with willow colony. Janghang Wetlands is a military-protected area where access had been prohibited for a long time and required military authorization for access. Thanks to this, it has the most animals and plants out of all the protected wetland areas and is the paradise of all wildlives. Today, Goyang City is running Ecosystem Experience Program, so the general public may visit after reservation. With such diverse lives and excellent natural view, Janghang Wetlands has been designated as a protected wetland area by the Ministry of Environment.
